The year is 1995, and Durval leads a somewhat stagnant life in downtown Sao Paolo. He runs a vinyl record shop, lives with his mom, and seems sullenly opposed to change, especially when it comes to the idea of recording music onto small silvery discs. But everything is about to change. And the unlikely catalyst for change is Kiki, a small girl with a candid and charming attitude that even Durval can't refuse. Kiki brings him and his mother out of their dull anachronistic world, but when it is revealed who she really is, a slightly absurd drama unfolds, in which Durval has to try hard to stay sane. Anna Muylaert's feature debut, which can be read as a modern tale about remnants of village culture clashing with urban development and modern life, is also an enjoyable Brazilian relative to High Fidelity (2000). It is commendably concentrated in time and space and features convincing performances by the lead actors, not least the adorable Isabela Guasco as Kiki. NICLAS ROLANDER
