Dumplings

Dumplings

av Fruit Chan

Growing old is not easy for Mrs Lee, a former soap star and married with a rich, but unfaithful husband. Desperate to get back her young looks and her husband’s desire, she goes to see the mysterious chef Mei, known for her special rejuvenating dumplings. “You’re rich but I’m free”, Mei, comments on Mrs Lee’s way of living her life. The horror of the film enters when the rejuvenating ingredient in the dumplings is revealed. But even if it isn’t shown, our fantasy will fill in the missing piece. However, even in the most disturbing moments, Fruit Chan makes room for some dark humor. Chan is telling us about two very different women and their struggle in a man’s world. Even if the content of the scenes might be strong, they’re staged with incredible beauty. Like the women themselves, with a beautiful exterior and ugly interior, the film is combining disgust and beauty. The fabulous cinematography of Christopher Doyle contributes much to the story. Dumplings was first a 40-minute film part of a three story compilation. It became so popular Chan made it into a feature film. Even those who normally don’t like horror films should see this.
