A gang of violent robbers, led by the charismatic Dobermann, are being hunted by the Paris police. The dirty cop, Christini, joins the hunt uninvited, which ends with a violent shoot-out and a fight to the death between him and Dobermann.
The review of ”Dobermann” in Variety says it all. It starts like this, ''Ultraviolent, sexist, dirty, drowned in drugs, and with as much social commentary as a land mine, ”Dobermann” is nonetheless a very powerful and entertaining film that will make the director Jan Kounen one of the most promising in European film.''
”Dobermann” is based on a series of books written by Joel Houssin, that are both well-known and popular in France. The books are set in the 1930's and are about hip, young, volatile Frenchmen with a predilection for committing violent crimes and taking drugs.
The film is not a straight interpretation of any of the books. Instead Houssin has simply written a new script and transferred the action to today's Paris. The film could be considered a modern western, a very violent portrayal of a fight between bad guys, who are actually heroes, and bad guys who really are bad guys and evil to the core. The cop Christini, for example, is not averse to tossing a hand grenade into a baby carriage, and he regularly tortures his suspects.
Kounen's narrative style is as quick and merciless as the main characters in his film. The imagery comes from someone who knows his rock videos, and his debut work feels like a mixture of Luc Besson, MTV, manga and Mad Max. An impressive list of influences.
The violence is abundant, very bloody and explosive. Many were surprised when the film made it past the Swedish censors without editing - the film is generally considered a sure bet for banning.
Dobermann is played by Vincent Cassel, whom we recognize from Mathieu Kassovitz's ”La Haine.” His mute girlfriend Nat la Gitane is played by fashion model Monica Bellucci, while Christini is played by Tcheky Karyo, whom we have seen in Luc Besson's ”Nikita”, among other things.
