Kore-Eda's comment on the nerve gas attack on Tokyo's underground in the early 90's by terrorgroup Aum Shinrikyo, which caused the death of twelve people.

In Distance the deed is similar, but even worse in its cruelty. Terrorgroup Ark of Truth poisioned Tokyo's drinking water, killing 128 people. Now, three years on, brought together by their common grief and the fact that they all had relatives in the now extinct group, four people meet to discuss their emotions. The quite heterogeneous foursome consists of a businessman, a slacker teen, a teacher and a young shy woman.

On the yearday of the attack they all meet at the place where the cult started. When they are about to leave, they discover that their car has been stolen. Forced to spend the night at the spot and with Koichi, a former member of Ark of Truth, their true feelings rise to the surface in this low-key-drama.
