När Finbar försvann

När Finbar försvann

av Sue Clayton

Childhood friends Finbar and Danny, two guys in their late teens who have been inseparable since they were toddlers, live on an absurdly grey and depressing housing estate in an Irish town. After Finbar's return home after a sojourn as a professional footballer in Europe, he is surrounded by a melancholic and dejected atmosphere. Finbar was the district's hero who was going to show that it is possible to could escape from this grey existence. Finbar and Danny wander about in this environment without anything to do and boredom and girl-problems force cracks to appeal in their friendship. After an argument, and in an act of desperation, Finbar climbs up onto a bridge parapet and balances provocatively, staring down at the heavy traffic below. His friends desperately try to talk sense into him. Then suddenly he is engulfed in fog. Finbar has disappeared … The years pass without a sign of Finbar. The mysterious disappearance has drawn public attention - not only from within Ireland, as we soon discover- and it has deeply affected both relatives and friends. Naturally Danny is also affected; as the missing person's best friend, he never seems to be able to get over Finbar's fate. After several episodes and a mysterious telephone call he decides to leave for Sweden, firmly resolved to find his old friend and discover the truth behind his mysterious disappearance. It is a long and absurd odyssey which leads him out into the Lapp wilderness, through snow and the bitter cold. Danny's journey becomes as much a journey of self-knowledge as a hunt for Finbar. A trigger which enabled him to break with the past and find his own place in life. During the journey he meets love, passion and friendship from people who are to change his life. Questions of what keeps people together or puts them to flight are brought to a head. The film offers many absurd and entertaining encounters between the Irish youngster and the quiet and mysterious dwellers of the north. It is a wonderful contrast to begin in the land of the Commitments only to end up in the magnificent fells of Norrland. Like drinking Guinness laced with spirit illicitly distilled far out in the Lappland fells, accompanied by a really melancholy tango. Or what about an English-speaking Sif Ruud on a runaway snow-scooter amidst the snowy fell birch trees?! CÖ
