Den fria viljan

Den fria viljan

av Matthias Glasner

The much discussed The Free Will does not waste any time. In the opening section a female passer-by is violently abused and raped by a sick young man, Theo, who is sent to a psychiatric detention centre. Almost ten years later he is set free, but is he prepared to confront society and enter normal relations? Theo soon meets Nettie, who also suffers from a dark past, but shows him a mother’s love and affection. Director Matthias Glasner, best described as a social realist Fassbinder, focuses on the perpetrator’s inner turmoil. The long running time, more than two and a half hours, makes it possible to get to know the characters’ critical conditions; a pair of case studies which society should learn from. With an impressively consequent narrative, intimate camera work and exceptional acting, The Free Will makes a grand film experience – demanding but also highly rewarding. JON ASP
