Departure tells the story of three old friends who are about to enter
adulthood. Teenagers Kazuya, Masaru and Shusuke live in Okinawa and are graduating from high school. Shusuke wants to become a designer and is about to travel to London. Kazuya is going to Tokyo to start his new
life at the university, but hasn't told his girlfriend Yukiko about his
decision.
The night has come when he must face the difficult task to tell her the news. At the same time Shusuke is looking for a girl to spend the night with and think he has found one, Mari, in a bar. But she has had one to many drinks and Shusukes plan fails miserably. Meanwhile, Masaru is working alone in a karaoke box where he meets the mysterious and unhappy Ryoko. Contemplative and mellow, with an Asian touch of Kaurismäki in this Japanese pop culture breakdown.
