Police commissioner September is keeping a known contract killer under surveillance in Capetown, and discovers that he's about to be sent to Sweden.
The reason for the trip is a mystery, but he informs Interpol of the killer's plans. A while later a real-estate agent disappears somewhere in southwestern Skåne. The case is assigned to commissioner Kurt Wallander. He has hardly begun the investigation, when a house, presumed to be uninhabited, is blown up. Investigations at the scene of the explosion uncover three interesting clues; a pistol of South African origin, a radio transmitter manufactured in Russia, and a chopped off black index finger.
