Olivier Assayas, mostly known for his slow-paced dramas, tries something new and different with his latest feature Demonlover, a mysterious corporate thriller about two companies violently competing for the same illicit 30- manga-graphics. Diane is sent out by one of the companies, Mangatronics, to infiltrate the other, Demonlover. But Diane realizes that Demonlover has got spies of its own and soon they're chasing her through the rainy streets of Paris, the luxurious hotels of Tokyo and even the Nevada desert in a mixture of grainy DV-shots of S&M-pornsites and smooth pans of cool blue-tinted office landscapes. All with a massive Sonic Youth soundtrack in the background. Apart from the magnificent photo and set designs, Assayas also has managed to put together an impressive cast to help him. Indie-queen Chloe Sevigny, supporting actress veteran Gina Gershon and Denmark's Hollywood contribution Connie Nielsen (of Gladiator-fame) all chip in to prove that their high school French lessons weren't just a waste of time. Demonlover is a stylistically splendid mix of Gucci-dressed CEO:s, anime-porn and brutal power-struggle. Industrial espionage never looked better than this. DAN FRÖBERG
