Francesco Dellamorte is a young man who works in a churchyard in a small village in the north of Italy. This is where he finds his enchanted garden, his sanctuary and his home.
Dellamorte has one friend: the faithful Gnaghi. He is small, ugly and mute, but the only one to share Dellamorte's melancholy existence. Until one day when the dead in the churchyard suddenly come to life because of a mysterious epidemic. Dellamorte realises that his life has acquired a new meaning: he has to stop the dead from entering the land of the living.
But those alive do not believe him and not even love is enough to give him the strength he needs. Three times Dellamorte meets his ideal woman, all played by the same actress, Anna Falchi: first she is a widow, then the mayor's secretary, and finally a young prostitute.
Michele Soavi's third feature film has its roots in the gothic romanticism and the now generally accepted Italian horror film. Dellamorte Dellamore is a romantic imitation of melancholy in the twilight culture, an ironic prod towards the ironic generation.
