David Katz, music journalist, has secured his dream job.
During several weeks, as an assignment for the hip-hop
newspaper, Mic Checks, he is to closely trail Damon Dash,
CEO of the record company Roc-A-Fella. The assignment is
a ticket to a new world. With eyes wide open, David follows
Dash to parties, to the luxurious office, and to the recording
studio where he comes across hip hop star Jay-Z. This new
world goes up to his head and, behind Mic Checks’ back, he
makes a deal with a gossip paper to author an article about
the rivalry he reckons exists between Dash and Jay-Z. In his
zeal to come up with a good story he begins to stir up the
supposed rivalry at every opportunity, which is going to cost
him dearly in the long run.
Damon Dash’s autobiographical debut is an entertaining
– and at times surprisingly sarcastic – comedy about
the influence of the media on the music business. In a
film replete with cameos and internal references to both
Roc-A-Fella and, more generally, to the hip hop industry, one
catches a glimpse of everybody from Chloé Sevigny and The
Sopranos actors to Mariah Carey and renown rappers.
