Based on the eternal antagonism between two characters, played by Sho Aikawa and Riki Takeuchi, Takashi Miike's Dead or Alive-trilogy almost plays like a real-life-yakuza version of Tom & Jerry. Playing different characters in each film, the basic plot always involves the two trying to kill each other off in the most gruesome ways. The final episode differs from the first and second films' present day settings and takes place in a sort of bleak Blade Runner-esque future where childbirth is outlawed and people who skip birthcontrol pills are forced under- ground. This time Takeuchi's character works for the local government and is on the constant hunt for a small group of rebels, helped by a combat droid played by Aikawa. Being one of eight films that Takashi Miike directed in 2001, Dead or Alive 3: Final is a worthy final episode following the frantically paced first film of the trilogy and the plotwise more outrageous Dead or Alive 2: Birds. Although with a slightly more trite story than its prequels, it does have a hilarious, and for the series, very appropriate ending. JAKOB ABRAHAMSSON
