Dead Beetle

Dead Beetle

av Pavel Marek

23-year old Martin dreams of becoming an actor and waits for the big chance. Meanwhile he mismanages his job and lives a generally sloppy life: in one day he loses his girlfriend, his job and gets a visit from his land lord who is looking to evict him, gets arrested by the police and is thrown into a mental institution. But there he falls in love with the beautiful Marteka.
Dead Beetle is a story of the vanity of man and the tragic consequences it can have. Vanity is personified by Martin, who has no distance to himself or his dream. His behavior bri ngs suffering to the people around him and eventually to himself as well. However, Pavel Marek brings out the comic sides in this story, which makes Dead Beetle more of a dark comedy than a sad drama.
Martins time at the mental institution unexpectedly becomes a happy time. Partly because Ile falls in love, but there he is also able to relax the image of himself that he wants to project to everyone around him. At tile institution there is no need for poses, everyone is accepted more or less crazy. For Marteka this means a security that she does not want to relinquish.
Marti n likes it there, but the need for freedom is more powerful; he believes that their happiness can be enjoyed outside the prison walls of the institution.
The film keeps a relaxed pace. Marek does not excel in daring camera movements or cunning visual angels. Instead he exhibits his talent through well crafted character portraits and his sense for creating realistic environments. With that he joins in the great tradition of Czech film.
