Married 35-year-old Parisian couple Marion and Philippe are going to Venice for their 10th anniversary when they find an abandoned suitcase filled with bills in foreign currency at the train station. They decide to cancel the trip and check in to a nearby hotel instead. As a private joke, Marion and Philippe tell their friends they did go to Venice. A few weeks later, back at home, Marion develops the film from the camera they brought on the vacation. To her surprise and horror the captions depict only sights from Venice. The couple is cast into a vicious downward spiral of paranoia. They drift apart, loosing touch with reality, causing Marion to leave their children and Philippe to seek comfort in a young man. And what does the note that they found in the bag reading “tel: Harabati” mean? This mysterious, Lynch-inspired drama is French director Brice Cauvin’s second feature. He shows that he masters the craft of intricate storytelling building up to an enigmatic climax. DEVI BRUNSON
