The year is 1742 and the Russian-Swedish war is raging. Finland is located between two warring powers, and the people are torn between different threats and armies. Their isolation is very cruel- they live on borrowed time and conceived hopes. Life on the colony is portrayed by the man who tells the story (Master Decency) and two young people, Anna and Anton, who wish to escape from the colony. They have been sentenced to isolation on the wrong grounds and do everything to find an escape boat.
A rich black/white film in the classic style of early Bergman. The protagonist, the fool Master Decency, is very entertaining and through him we get some distance to Anna and Anton's desperate wish to flee the colony. The voice of the fool is very personal, it is a warm and good man who drives this story forward. He sits in his chamber and is amazed, and scribbles things down in his book, and persecutes the people with his questions, He is the truthful one who is also seduced by the fickle beauty of the colony, he is a character that comes close to the spectator and contributes to the Bergmanesque atmosphere with his jesti ng and at the same time serious attitude.
People are portrayed through quick dialogue and their positions in the relationships of the colony. The humorous tone in the movie, which brightens up the very gloomy story, returns with the ending which really makes one think ''Perkele, that was really good!''
