Llia is a poor boy who lives in an isolated part of Iran. He works long, hard days at a local strip-mine were they produce bricks. During nights his dreams are disrupted by voices who beckon him to another world. To purge himself of these spirits he runs across the unending desert plains. One day a girl, Limua, the same age as Llia, arrives with her mother, to do a seasons work at the mine. Llia and the girl develop a mute relationship, through looks and giggles. After a while Limua gives him a brick with her own hand print on it, which later gets thrown into a well. This mysterious but liberating action makes the spirits disappear. When the rain comes the season is over and Limua has to leave.
Dance of Dustdepicts a lonely boy growing up in a meager environment. It uncovers his moments of loneliness and despair, but also his moments of hope. There are several scenes were he chases the winds overthe plain. The everyday actions of the workers are described in great detail; how they work the dry land with axes and water, get water from the rusty barrels and pray to their gods. The richness of detail and the great interest placed on everyday life make this film seem ethnographic. At the same time it is very
poetic with its suggestive imagery. The pictures are underscored by the sounds of the whipping winds, which through these sounds play an integral part in the symboI ic meaning of the film. According to the director himself Dance of Dust is a result of his own relationship with the wind-
as Llia he has also constantly hunted it. The films actual theme is coming to the understanding that what one is looking for is not in the outer reality, but within oneself.
