A curse is put upon the starving class. In an America which has been sold off to cynical yuppies and cold opportunists, the Tate family lives in an environment where each and every one deceives each other in order to find personal fulfilment. Daddy Weston is a failed drunkard who spend most of his life at the bar the Alibi. His wife Emma and their two children Wesley and Ella are waiting at home on the run-down farm.
One night Weston arrives home to find that Emma has locked the front door. Cheered on by his daughter Ella, he breaks down the door, only to stagger away to get another drink. He eventually falls asleep in his car, and dreams of how the worthless piece of desert land that he owns is turned into a fortune.
But Emma has dreams of her own. She wants to sell the house and move to Europe. She is already planning a deal with Taylor, the handsome lawyer. What Emma does not know is that Weston are having thoughts in the same vein although he has already sold the house to Ellis, the bar owner, and is planning to move to Mexico.
Curse of the Starving Class is a black comedy based on a Sam Shepard play, adapted by Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy) and directed by the debutant Michael McClary. A film for all of you who have a special affinity with ''born losers'' such as Al Bundy and Homer Simpson.
