Ciudad de Maria (Mary's City) is an independently produced documentary depicting the religious, economic and social phenomenon intersecting in San Nicolas, Argentina. An incomparable religious miracle is triggered when Gladys Motta, a woman from an ordinary neighbourhood in the small city, proclaims that the Virgin Mary appeared before her for the first time on the 25th of September 1983. Although Gladys never gives an interview or makes a public appearance, the construction of an enormous temple begins, and thousands of devoted people start going to San Nicolas on a pilgrimage. Merely the enigmatic figure of Gladys herself causes a total change in people's everyday life in San Nicolas. Ciudad de Maria is an example of the brand new Argentine Young Cinema, which focuses on the social decay that has affected the country in recent years. The film was awarded for Best Argentine Film at the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival 2002. While retaining the personal perspective, Enrique Bellande does nor claim exclusive rights to the definition of the development in San Nicolas rather, he leaves it up to each of us to decide our own interpretation.
