Cube

Cube

av Vincenzo Natali

Six people wake up from their ordinary lives to find themselves in a set of cell-like cubes, which they can't get out of. Their prison is reminiscent of a labyrinth and however hard they try to find a way out, they always end up in the same cube they think they have just left.
The Cube is an existentialist drama with a scenario from the horror- and science fiction-genres. It was awarded the prize for best debut feature at the 1997 Toronto film festival. The film was shot in less than a month and in one location on Iy,
a warehouse outside Toronto. The six actors are all unknown in the context of film.
Depending on which cube the characters are in the colors and the light changes; in one cube it is red, in another green. The walls consist of geometric shapes. The camera angles shift quickly, from below to straight in front to above. The art director Jasna Stefanovic had the German silent film The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari in mind when she designed the cubes. She said: ''The perspective was intended to be a mad man's'' vision of the world.
I n this ''Mad world'', the six characters fight for survival and to get out into the normal world. They are dependent on each other and the different skills that the others have. One of the men seems to be crazy, but turns out to be a math wizard. Another one is too foolhardy and gets in trouble. It is not clear which person or persons wi II make it out of the nightmare alive.
