As one of the front figures of the revolutionary New Argentine Cinema, director Adrián Caetano has scrutinized the country’s social and political scene for a number of years. His feature Bolivia was a subtle and low-key film tackling racism and poverty. His fourth feature, Buenos Aires, 1977, on the other hand is expressionistic in the extreme. Based on the testimony of Claudio Tamburrini, it is a harrowing film about four young men who escape from prison camp during the rule of the military junta in Argentina between 1976 and 1983, during which time over 30 000 people disappeared.Buenos Aires, 1977 blends realism with an aesthetic that brings horror films of the 70’s and the works of Franz Kafka, to mind. With its slightly underexposed look, low-angle shots and a world of lunatic arbitrary rules of bureaucracy, Caetano creates an atmosphere of unrelenting oppression. In the words of the director it is “the story of survivors of horror, told as a horror film.” HÉLÈNE DAHL
