When Marjorie tries to force Gus into making more money in order to buy her a house in the suburbs, he feels his inadequacy as a man and as a human being. Being desperate, he gives in to an impulse and steals the necessary sum from work. And all this to return home to find that Marjorie has another man.
Gus' boring but secure life is shattered. He has lost all hope and he gets into the car in order to run away - not only from the law but also from himself.
