A MUCH DEBATED POLICE FILM ABOUT the late 80s gangfights in L.A. Danny McGavin is a young, hotheaded police officer who works in team with the older, experienced Bob Hodges. They belong to a group of policemen assigned to keep down street crime and fight the increasing drug business. Danny wants to make them get tougher, while Bob mostly wants to talk to and get to know the members of the gangs.

COLORS IS A MOVIE STARRING Sean Penn and Robert Duvall. Sean Penn sent me the screenplay asking me if I would be interested in directing it. The script was about drug dealing in Chicago, and how a white cop and a black cop stop this terrible cough syrup drug from being exploited across the United States. I had a meeting with Orion Pictures and told them that it wouldn't even make a bad television show, and they shouldn't make the film. They asked what would make it a good film, and I said to make it about an older cop and a younger cop, make it about real gangs in Los Angeles, and make it about real drugs in the real city. Orion's reply was ''Are there gangs in Los Angeles?'' I said yes. Sean proceeded to find a writer and get a rewrite. I read it and liked it. I made some simple changes, and we made the movie. It was a commercial success and put me back in the director's business.
