Claire Dolan

Claire Dolan works as a prostitute in
New York to pay the constantly increasing debts to her pimp. When her mother dies, she tries to leave the life as a call girl behind. She starts an affair with a man who agrees to have her child and helps her pay her debts. Finally Claire realizes that she cannot depend on anyone else.
The director Lodge Kerrigan got the idea for Claire Dolan when he was editing his previous movie, Clean, Shaven. The place where he worked was in New York's Red Light District. Several of the prostitutes were pregnant, some of them were in the late stages of pregnancy. He was badly affected, but asked himself why he was so chocked at the situation of these particularwomen. He reached the conclusion that the reason that he was reacting so strongly to these prostitutes/mothers-tobe, was nothing more than his own sexist prejudices.
The film depicts a cold, clinical and geometrical New York, with comparably empty streets. In this way Kerrigan wishes to underline the alienation and isolation the characters feel, but without creating a sense of claustrophobia and voyeurism. This is reached in certain segments where thinly cut motifs from the city scape are
shown; only the windows of the skyscrapers are shown on the screen. This visual style is used by Kerrigan to comments on the estranging aspect of the flesh trade.
Kerrigan is of the opinion that all the components that go into the film medium are equally important. He sees as his main task as a director to balance the different elements of the fi 1m so that one does not over-shadow the other. Be it cinematography, acting, editing, sound etc.; everything is there to complement the rest.
That two Europeans have received the biggest parts in this film is a pure coincidence, according to Kerrigan. He says that he used the best actors that were available. It does not hurt to see some new faces in the American indie business, where everyone otherwise seems to be using the same actors.
