Chrystal

Chrystal

av Ray McKinnon

Some pain never ends. Just like the sound of a steel guitar clinging away in the night of the rural south, it never seems to fade. Joe, played by Billy Bob Thornton, returns to his home deep in the muddy woods of the Ozarks after spending 20 years in prison. Back then, he drove his wife Chrystal and their young child off the road. The child died and so did in one sense, Chrystal, who was severly injured. She is now living in a backwoods shack, putting out almost to anyone just to get some relief from the mental and physical pain. The communication between Joe and Chrystal is almost as non-existent as it was during his
time in prison. But Joe's search for redemption is inexhaustible.
Chrystal is director Ray McKinnon's feature film debut and it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004. McKinnon also wrote the script and costars as a vermin-like, white trash hick, and his wife, Lisa Blount, plays Chrystal. After films like The Man Who Wasn't There and Levity, Thornton truly knows how to playa broken man, and McKinnon captures the sense of regret and loss in an abandoned, inbred environment that screams of anguish. It's brilliant.
