Roman Polanski's thriller set in Los Angeles of the 1930's has a wonderful period atmosphere and gives a frightening look into corruption and moral decay. The story about the rotten rich man, played by John Huston, who is behind a skein of corruption, is practically Raymond Chandler. Chinatown is Roman Polanski's best film and the part of private detective Gittes was Jack Nicholson's definite breakthrough. The thick, atmospheric portrait of Los Angeles becomes a commentary
on American society. And an existentialist morality.
