Edmond, a compulsive TV-watcher, and his apathetic son scooter live in a caravan in the Nevada desert. One of the highlights of Edmond's life in grubby vests is when he acquires a new zapper for his satellite TV set. Eighteen-year-old Scooter's one and only leisure pastime consists of occasional visits to a bar where nothing much ever happens. One day they are visited by fat Aunt Edna and Scooter's teenage sister Laura. Edna prevails on Edmond to pull himself together a little. Scooter and Laura get to know each other and break the monotony by going off to Las Vegas, where a faintly incestuous tension develops between them.
Comment:
China Lake, selected for numerous awards, is the existential story of 33-year old Californian film director Dieter Wiehl, who follows in the footsteps of Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch. Phlegmatic. China Lake is photographed both beautifully and with narrative impact by Jasper Marquardt. People’s mental isolation is tellingly depicted with the aid of the desolate landscape. A soft-spoken gently ironic and loving story of life on the outer reaches of American society.
