Sympathy for Lady Vengeance concludes Park Chan-wook`s revenge trilogy, which started with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance in 2002 and (was) followed up a year later with Old Boy. The basic story is simple, Guem-ja Lee is wrongly imprisoned for the kidnapping of a five year-old boy. 13 years later she makes use of the friends she made in prison to carry out her long planned revenge on the man that put her there. Guem-ja was also forced to give up her newborn daughter for adoption, and in a side story she travels to Australia to find her. Lady Vengeance starts of in fairly fast pace, cross-cutting between Guem-ja’s scheming of the final act of revenge and her time in prison. In drastic and often humorous scenes we are introduced to Guem-ja’s fellow inmates. Gradually, the film very deliberately drops in tempo as the more complex aspects of the revenge plot are revealed. The story becomes darker as Park wants us to reflect on the very nature of vengeance and redemption. Park is known for using heavy violence in his films, and The Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is no exception. But the violent acts carried out are never without consequences, in Park´s world it is never easy to kill a man.ROLAND MADARÁSZ
