Professional killers Yeti and Cool Sam are brothers-in-arms and best friends. Contrary to his quiet friend, Yeti is impulsive and emotional. He is seduced by the young wife of an arms dealer and is thrown into an evil circle of revenge and treason. Sam stands untiringly at his side when they are wanted by the police and the Triads. The magic of Hong Kong films is often found in the rather strange mixture of cold, brutal violence and emotional and somewhat smarmy sentimentality. The members of the Triads are hard, tough, cold-blooded and very macho- most of all they fear impotence and nothing makes them lose face as much as when their virility is questioned. But sometimes, these heroes-in-arms show a need for romance and tenderness. To be thrown without any warning between these two emotional extremes embarrasses the unaccustomed viewer. Clarence Yiu-Leung Fok has created a hardboiled film which is at the same time a fantastically beautiful psychological drama. Jing Wong, the screenwriter and producer of Cheap Killers, has directed almost 70 films, made the screenplay of almost 60 films and also acted in more than 20 films. He knows which buttons to press and, together with Clarence Yiu-Leung Fok, the G-spot is not far off! Light and colour are used in a creative and masterly way, both the action and drama scenes bathe in a reddish-yellow sunshine, the fights are slanted by a bold camera, colour and - of course - slowmotion features. Together with soft music, a hose and wet clothes, purple veils flutter in the wind and one is reminded of a Wham! - video of the 80's! Also, the heroes are ever so handsome in their white airy linen suits dramatically stained with traces of red blood.
