A fight between a matador and a bull leaves the matador seriously injured and the bull dead. Carnages is by no means a gore-film, but a story about what happens with the bull's body after the fight and with the people whose seemingly random encounters the different remains of the majestic 475 kilo animal: a struggling actress, a philosopher who's taking up ice-skating. The little girl who sees things very clearly but is constantly misunderstood by grown-ups. A mother with a mysterious past, and a son who finds his unknown father ... The bull's name, Romero, means rosemary in Spanish - a plant said to heal all ills, and its healing force is transferred to the different characters who, through the metaphor of bullfighting and its arenas, are forced to confront themselves in a passage towards individual truth. The beautifully constructed stories feed into each other and fates are linked as director Delphine Gleize mixes serious realism with humour and the burlesque, producing great warmth and the promise of salvation in this calm but steady colourful drama.
