The Ulman family is trying its best to cope with everyday life after the recent, tragic departure oftheir husband and father painfully present. The 17-year-old daughter Maya has to act as surrogate parent to her kid brother and sister since their mother has to work long shifts at the hospital in order to make ends meet. The situation is hard to combine with
a more desirable teenage existence, and when Maya, for once, gets to forget her responsibilities another tragic event strikes her family.
Given the complex subject and the moderate style, it is hard to believe that Broken Wings is director Nir Bergman's
feature film debut. The well developed characters and dynamic depiction of the distressed family gives the impression that the person behind this film is a director that has done his film school homework. Despite the realistic style and serious theme, there is room for subtle comic elements, which gives the film a bittersweet quality. These components give the film a kinship with the early works of Milos Forman and the Czechoslovakian cinema of the sixties. It remains to be seen if Broken Wings will spark a similar movement for 21-century Israeli film.
