Godard's first feature film is still a masterpiece in all its simplicity. An innovative piece (the movie history's first jump-cut ever, for example), full of youthful energy and attitude.
That energetic attitude manifests itself in the body of Michel, the small time crook who kills a cop and hides in his American girlfriend Patricia's apartment while his hunters keeps closing in on him.
Jean-Paul Belmondo's anti-hero is sculpted on Humphrey Bogart and other tough guys of the film noir, in an example of Godard's ambivalent relationship to the classic American cinema. The story borrows heavily from typical Hollywood themes and genres, but still Godard tries to do something completely different from the conventional movie tradition in every scene, whether it's an unusual cut or a camera angle out of the ordinary. It's a film that constantly challenges its viewers. And that is why it remains such a thrilling film, more than 40 years after its release.
