A butterfly flaps its wings. Following the effects of chaos theory, this causes a tornado over the Gulf of Mexico which, in turn, provokes a terrible plane crash. Fate operates entirely at random and so the 24-year-old Manu is, miraculously, the sole survivor. Some years later, Manu is working in the Iocal supermarket of a small Austrian town. Through both deliberate and accidental associations, her life - shared with family and friends - turns into an interlocking web of relationships, creating a constant flux of cause and effect.
Barbara Albert's second feature film is a demanding piece of work, based as it is on the complexity of cause and effect. Even the tiniest, almost invisible of events may indeed lead to a chain of associations which dominate a large group of
people who quite helplessly surrender to a chain of reality that they are unable to affect. This impressive chain of interrelated events suggests the helplessness of? human being, echoing the consequences of a sudden loss. Following this truly drastic chain of irreversibility, the director explores
at length the theme of interpersonal dependence and the intricate relationships in which we are, all trapped.
