Ms Barker is not your average housewife. She sleeps with her sons, kidnaps millionaires, and robs banks in her spare time. We were aware at the time that we were making a very special sort of movie. Certainly, it was a gangster film, a crime film, but it was more than that. It examined the dynamics of a very strong, unified family. We took a look at the importance of family ties. In this movie, it was the woman who called the shots, leaving a bewildered, weak-willed father-figure in the background.

Comment:
De Niro was probably the most intense actor I have ever worked with. He prepared in great detail and came in with powerful emotions for his scenes. For Lloyd's part, he reversed what he did later as Jake laMotta in Raging Bull and Al Capone in The Untouchables; he stopped eating and lost weight as his addiction progressed. We shot roughly in sequence. He consumed vitamins, water, fruit juices, and a little bit of nourishment. He lost close to thirty pounds and took on the haggard, sickly look of a junkie. The man is as dedicated as any actor in America.
