Masculinity, homophobia and glorification of violence in rap music and hip-hop culture are all here under investigation. Filmmaker and hip-hop head Byron Hurt has a couple of things to say about the disadvantages of ”thug life”. In similarity to Michael Moore, he combines revealing video clips and sharp interviews to make his point. Intellectuals, people on the street, well known as well as aspiring rappers all act as oracles. Hurt is not afraid to get personal. He is constantly present in the film and shares his own experiences of rap music and hip-hop. Artists like Chuck D, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons lend their voices. How could the once so political and rebellious hip-hop scene turn into a wannabe gangsta lifestyle - and whose interest is it to maintain it? This is an important and frightening documentary about loss of perspective, denial and repression. WIM WIKLUND
