Best laid plans

Two friends re-encounter in a bar after a long time. Bryce is the successful one and has returned to his home town to look after a house. Nick is the one that was forced to drop out from university due to his father's illness and is now working at a recycling plant, tormented by large debts. When the young Lissa enters the scene the story takes unexpected turns. Tropico, the small town where Nick and Lissa live, is deserted and boring. Both have dreams of getting out. Nick's work at the recycling plant becomes a symbol of the town, where everything stays the same. The imagery is thorough and the course of events is depicted with advanced camera angles. Best Laid Plans is, with its extreme darkness, a tribute to film-noir and, with its many twists and turns, is reminiscent of The Usual Suspects. Circumstances seem to plot against the protagonists, especially against the vulnerable Nick. Each situation gets even worse than they could imagine and they cannot put things right again. They get such strain that they finally do things they normally wouldn't think themselves capable of doing.
