Walter Ruttmann's film from 1927 is one of the great classics in the history of the documentary. Berlin die symphonie einer Grosstadt is precisely what the title says, film as orchestrated music, not as dramatic story. R uttmann is, as opposed to his contemporary Russian Dziga Vertov, more interested in the rhythm and movement than in social documentation. Montage was a key word in the avant-garde film circles of the 1920's, and it is with fast, contrasting ed iting that R uttmann creates the artistic soul of the film by using simple images.
