At the age of 97, Portuguese master director Manoel de Oliveira delivers a sequel to Luis Buñuel and Jean-Claude Carrière’s classic Belle de Jour. Belle Toujours takes place 38 years after its original, and Michel Piccoli is once again cast as the sadist Henri. One night he sees Séverine, the woman he never was allowed to possess, at a concert. She tries her best to avoid him, but finally gives in with the hope of finding out what Henri told her husband while he was paralyzed by a gunshot. The situation only grows tenser as Henri, satisfied with his sadism, takes revenge on Séverine.Bulle Ogier replaces Catherine Deneuve as the memorable character Séverine – the wife who loved her husband but could not give in to him physically. Instead her fantasies of being dominated would get her entangled in a psychological underworld with dreams of strange desires, eventually leading to her working as a prostitute in a brothel. Belle Toujours is a dark, yet humoristic, homage to surrealism. LUKAS ECKESKOG
