Tum, a Buddhist monk, is forced to leave his monastery in the Northeast of Thailand when his sister, who lives in the southern Muslim small town Bay tong, is killed in a terrorist bombing attack, leaving behind a daughter. In Bay tong he faces a totally new world, surrounded by cell phones, sleazy bars and erotic magazines. On top of that, Tum is confronted with the responsibility of raising his niece, Maria. However, in the practical aspects of life, Maria is the one who takes care of Tum, as his sister's friends introduce him
to a comletely different lifestyle than he is used to.
Thailand's most successful director Nonzee Nimibutr tells a warm and humorous story about love, tolerance, religion and sexuality. Rich and clever imagery accompanies the narrative, adding wit to the softness of the story. Bay tong will surely be described by many as ''cute'', but the film raises numerous moral questions that stay with you for a long time.
