Peter Birro, probably the most active and critically acclaimed young scriptwriter of contemporary Swedish cinema and TV, has teamed up with director Ulf Malmros in creating a kids movie for all ages. Malmros, using colours as well as playing with the super-natural, has previously made films with children or teenagers in focus, always avoiding the sentimental smear of Hollywood productions. In Bast i Sverige! the duo tells the tale of Marcello, a boy who seemingly sucks at everything he does. His dad, an Italian-born soccer-freak, guesses what Marcello goes through, but is a bit too entangled in his own white lies to be able to help out. Life sucks big-time - even Jesus Christ has too much going on to give Marcello constructive advice on his situation. But one day, Fatima moves into the neighbourhood and Marcello catches a glimpse of light in the end of the tunnel. Bast i Sverige!, with its way of describing everyday life for two kids, is an extraordinary film in all its simplicity. With lots of humour, wisdom and imagination, it is a Romeo & Juliet of the younger generation, combined with a touch of Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch (1997) and the peculiar flavour of Malmros' own brilliant TV-series Rapport till him len (1994).
