Barcelona

Barcelona

av Whit Stillman

Barcelona during the early 1980's. Disco and hamburgers are still all the rage; NATO and American corporations are not foremost on Ted's, a young American salesman posted in Barcelona, mind. On the contrary, love is a much greater threat. The same goes for his cousin Fred, an officer in the U.S. Navy, who is over to prepare a visit to Spain by the American fleet. Fred gets to represent the ''typical'' American with a bragging and patriotic attitude and with no understanding whatsoever of Ted's personal problems, and what is worse, of the political situation - something that in the end proves to be disastrous.

Ted with his romantic, and Fred with his more cynical, view of love, eventually end up at a party where they both meet their ''dream dates''. Ted's dream is very brief since his planned date with Aurora never happens. Instead Ted gets to meet Aurora's friend Montserrat, who he falls in love with. To his surprise Ted finds out that Montserrat already has a steady relationship and lives with a man, Ramon, a rabid anti-American. Terrorists strike once more and an American is killed. Fred ostentatiously wears his uniform during a national celebration in reaction to what happened. He and his friends barely escape the attacks of furious Spaniards. Ted's crisis becomes increasingly worse when his love Montserrat returns to Ramon and his job as a salesman is threatened. The loss seems total when his cousin Fred becomes the victim of an attack. . .
