THE CONCEPTUAL ARTIST ANNE BENTON witnesses a mafia murder and has to be done away with. The professional killer Milo manages to find her despite her numerous changes of identity. After a while the hunter and his victim starts to get attracted to one another. Now both the police and the mafia are after them. This is the world premiere of Dennis Hopper's own versionof the tllm. _

BACKTRACK IS A FILM STARRING Jodie Foster, Joe Pesci, John Turturro, myself, Dean Stockwell, Fred Ward, Vincent Price, Bob Dylan. It's a film about a hit man who falls in love with his victim. I felt by doing a linear story I could tell some personal things. I used places that I knew, where I had lived, and my own personal experiences. I turned over what I considered a two hour finished film to Vestron pictures, and I went off to act in a picture with Kiefer Sutherland called Flashback. When I came back to Los Angeles, Vestron said that they wanted to show me a movie. They had removed an hour of film and added a half hour of things I'd taken out. They had reshot a beginning, reshot an ending, and taken all of Michel Colombier's score away and redone the music. I was horrified when I saw it, and even more horrified when I learned that they had cut negative, which is an irreversible process. I sued them and had my name taken off the film. Vestron already sold certain foreign territories where the movie went out and the DGA pseudonym of Alan Smithee was put on the film as the director. My law suit stopped the film from being shown in the United States. Vestron went bankrupt and Carolco bought the company. Carolco sold the film to Showtime and gave me the money to reedit my version of the film and put it back together. I have been working, putting mini superimposures together on the negative, so that I could put my cut back together. This will be the first time that it has been seen in it's reel form. Another film about art as art, as life as life.
