With its colorful yet unsparing performances and blending of the tragic and the absurd, Spanish director Arévalo’s award- winning debut is a melodrama of a bittersweet and distinctly Spanish kind. Working as a janitor while studying for a business degree and caring for his ailing father, young Jorge only seems like a shadowy supporting character in the drama of his own life. Desperate for change he is dreaming of the dark blue suit that he sees in a shop window daily, a symbol for everything he wants. Orbiting around him are his family and his friends, who all seem to be moving on. Arévalo’s delicate and quirky examination of family relations, and self-deception in the name of survival is greatly aided by cinematographer Juan Carlos Gómez. Painting in different shades of blue and with intimate close-ups Gómez turns DarkBlueAlmostBlack into an uncertain state of mind, a constantly shifting and mesmerizing kaleidoscope. HÉLÈNE DAHL
