Awful Normal

Awful Normal

av Celesta Davis

At the age of five, a friend of the family sexually abused Celesta Davis. The man, Alan, also molested her older sister Karen. When the girls told their mother, Ellen, about what had happened, she chose not to file charges. Instead, she made Alan seek counselling, and he remained friends with the family. Betrayed by their own parents, the sisters suffered great emotional pain as they were forced to face their abuser again and again. 25 years later, Celesta decides that in order to be able to go on with her life, she needs to confront Alan with what he did to her as a child. Together with Karen, Ellen and a camera crew she sets out to find
him. Skilfully edited by Tim Skousen, Awfully Normal depicts the emotional pain and confusion that a single act can cause, not only to the victim but also to the perpetrator. Having faced her biggest demon, Davis makes great therapeutic progress, after which she chooses to go public with this very personal footage in order to inspire others who are carrying their secret in silence. Awful Normal was awarded Best Documentary at the Cinequest San Jose Fllm Festival, and received the Special Jury Award at the Florida Film Festival earlier this year.
