A hint at how it’s all going to end is given in the opening scene: a dwarf picador thrusts his lances into the neck of a rhino, and then turns them against himself and commits suicide. ”What goes around comes around” seems to be the theme of the movie and therefore it is not surprising when the only one who gets through Avida untouched is the harmless deaf mute, played by Kervern himself. After witnessing his rich, eccentric boss dying – trapped in his fully automated, super secure home – he flees and ends up in a zoo where he becomes involved in a dog-napping. Of course nothing turns out as planned in this incredibly odd opera drama. While the director pair’s debut Aaltra was completely absurd, Avida, in comparison, is toned down a bit. Some of the scenes, for example when the two ketamine-addicted kidnappers are playing boule with white garden chairs (“No, I threw that one!”), are unbeatable.SARA ERIKSSON
