Appleseed

Appleseed

av Shinji Aramaki

The year is 2131 and Deunan Knute, a hi-tech feminine fighting machine, roams the scorched earth of a planet ravaged by the war between the remaining members of the human race and bioroids, an army of machines who once were domestic servants. With Deunan's communication lines severed, she seems unaware that the fighting in fact ended long ago, until she is lmocked out, picked up by a her former boyfriend Briareos and taken back to the gleaming metropolis of Olympus. Briareos, 75% reconstructed as a cyborg, no longer feels a glimmer in his metallic loins for his former lover Deunan. Meanwhile, beneath the surface calm of Olympus, mysterious conspiratorial shadows are looming.
A technical landmark mixture of CGI and traditional ani me, Appleseed is based on Masumune Shirow's manga and doing the series justice by retaining the unique feel of the original, translating its multi-layered narrative and themes into a coherent, streamlined film. Shinji Aramaki's direction perfectly balances the story's intellectual and visual sides, generating an atmosphere of awe and wonder, helping to create a fascinating future society in Olympus. Tackling the meaning of being human and the nature of the human soul, the film lingers in the mind long after viewing.
