For ten years Tom Barman has been the singer/songwriter of the rock & roll band dEUS, one of Belgium's most internationally acclaimed bands. Although he attended film school, it was during a break from dEUS that Barman gotthe opportunity to complete his first feature film.
Any Way the Wind Blows may be gauged as an alternative postcard from Antwerpen, Barman's hometown. During
one day the camera sweeps through pedestrian streets, intersections, and commercial districts, while letting us get acquainted with the lives of eight individuals of different ages and at various stages of life who apparently have nothing in common. Yetthat evening they will party together
in an apartment. The peculiar Windman, with the ability to command the winds, will also be there.
Any Way the Wind Blows is a lively film eschewing leading characters, lacking any discern able plot, providing no particular message and with neither beginning nor end. Barman has nevertheless successfully created a feeling of something which shakes, swings, rocks, and blows back and forth. A street-smart soundtrack of cool tunes, including the likes of Charles Mingus, Queens ofthe Stone Age, Yazoo, JJ Cale, and Barman's own disco project Magnus, props up the film.
