A young woman, studying to become an architect, meets a young man, who works at the blood donor-central in Havana. The man is obsessed with sex, and must have the young, beautiful woman. He succeeds and is satisfied, but the woman on the other hand, has fallen in love and wants them to be together. Slowly but surely, she makes him see things the same way she does.
Amor Vertical feels typically Cuban,
and words such as sensuous, rich and intensive, naturally pop into ones mind when describing it. With simple imagery Arturo Sotto Díaz, paints his tale of Cuba, the Cubans and Havana, ''the most beautiful city in the world''.
According to Ernesto, the young man, all Cubans have a fixation on sex, and Dfaz makes no attempt to convince us of the opposite. Beside the passionate sexscenes, we get quick glimpses into the Cuban everyday life. Many lines contain criticism to the US, and the American hate towards Cuba, but this is not a political film. The USA is not only a threat,
it is also an instrument of hope - the queue to the American Embassy is long.
Amor Vertical is a mixture of social realism and everyday surrealism, and the director has filled the movie with absurd humor. Diaz, who both wrote and directed, has dedicated this film to Tomas Gutierrez Alea, Luis Bunuel and Federico Fellini.
