Set at the end of the 1800's, the film tells the story of how the director's family came to America. The young Stavros and his family live in the Turkish countryside. As members of the minority Greek population, they are oppressed by the Turks. Stavros is sent by his father to Constantin-ople to earn money so that the rest of the family can eventually move there, too. However, Stavros has plans of his own - to earn enough so that he can travel to America.
On his way to the city, Stavros is cheated by a Turk and loses his travel money. In a rage, he kills the Turk and takes his money.
Once in Constantinople, Stavros realizes that it's very difficult to make the quick money that he had been dreaming about. In order to get some capital together quickly, he marries the daughter of a rich businessman, and with the help of the generous dowry buys a ticket to the alluring new country, and leaves his newlywed wife.
