In The American Nightmare, horror devotee Adam Simon celebrates groundbreaking 70's horror cinema with a new documentary. The title should strike different kinds of notes with both horror fans and film scholars as well as politicians advocating censorship of media violence while simultaneously fighting for the right to freely buy and use high-power firearms.
Special effects whiz Tom Savini relates how his experiences as a soldier in Vietnam marked his work on George Romero's zombie films. Romero puts Night of the Living Dead in perspective with the civil rights movement, while David Cronenberg and John Carpenter discuss the relation between sexual repression and horror. Several film scholars add their two cents worth, the end result of which is eminently watchable.
