If you’ve been anticipating a full-scale documentary about the American punk scene your wait is over. This is the ultimate trip back to when punk was made angrier - and more violent - than ever before. In 1981 Reagan was sworn in as president, rock was dead and disco dominated the airwaves. Conformity spread across America and bands like Bad Brains and Black Flag emerged in response, providing an alternative to all outsiders. The film explores the hardcore scene and its unique stance against drugs. “There is no shortage of people out there telling you to get high. In every kind of music there were people supporting drugs. Kids were looking for something else,” Minor Threat’s Ian Mackaye comments. Director Paul Rachman mixes rare footage with unique interviews. We meet the scene’s leading figures including Henry Rollins and Keith Morris, as well as less expected names such as Matthew Barney, Flea and Moby. If you’re going to see only one music documentary this year, this is it.DAVID HAGEN
